The Sacrament of Civil Disobedience
The Sacrament of Civil Disobedienceis the only book about
faith-based nonviolent civil disobedience as a method for social change
to be written in decades. It explores the theological, biblical and
spiritual basis for civil disobedience as a method of resistance, including
the roots of civil disobedience in the Hebrew scriptures, the illegal
actions of Jesus, Paul and the early Christians, as well as extensive
suggestions on preparation for nonviolent direct action, trial and
jail. Each chapter includes a story from John Dear's own experience
with civil disobedience. The conclusion tells the story of John's Plowshares
disarmament action. The foreword is by Daniel Berrigan.
